The administration of President Donald Trump on August 12 announced a new regulation that could deny permanent residence to hundreds of thousands of people if they were ... too poor.
Regulated by the top immigration adviser of Donald Trump's administration, Mr. Stephen Miler, effective from mid-October, may refuse to apply for a temporary or permanent visa anyone who does not meet the standard income guidelines or receives state assistance such as subsidies, food stamps, social housing or government health care programs.
According to a notice published in the Federal Gazette, such a change will ensure that immigrants will be "self-sufficient", not dependent on public resources to meet their needs, but based solely on on your own ability or assistance from family members, sponsors or individual organizations. Experts say this may be the most drastic measure in the anti-immigration policies of President Donald Trump's administration.
Meanwhile, immigration advocates criticized the plan, considering it an attempt to legally reduce immigration without the parliamentary approval to change the US law. .
In 2016, about 800,000 people were granted green cards in the US. According to the Migration Policy Institute, a US research organization, the new rules will force more than half of all cases applying for a family green card to be denied.
The new regulation, derived from the Immigration Act of 1882, allowed the US Government to refuse to issue visas to anyone who could become a "social burden". Immigration agencies in recent years have rejected many visa applications if they realize they can become most dependent on government grants.
